I've no experience with vmware workstation as I've always used the vmware server.
Aslo I'm not used any linux installation with GUI over vmware. Its always linux servers on vmware so they were all without X.
However to get the video working properly, you'll have in to install the vmware graphics driver in all of those distro and configure X to load using the vwware graphics drivers.

it might can be a wide screen display problem with ur gfx driver
