Missionary position is bad for your health

Too much sex can give you carpal tunnel syndrome, according to a researcher - and, yes, he's talking about sex with other people.

Dr John Zenian, writing in Medical Hypotheses, explains, "Carpal tunnel syndrome can develop during sexual intercourse when the hands become repeatedly extended while under pressure from the weight of the upper body.

"The bilaterality of carpal tunnel syndrome can be explained by the fact that both hands are needed to support the upper body during sexual intercourse."

A fan of the missionary position, presumably.

Carpal tunnel syndrome causes symptoms such as tingling or numbness in the hand. It's generally ascribed to using a PC or operating machinery, and is caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist.

But Zenian reckons his theory explains a few things about the syndrome that have had the experts scratching their heads - notably, why it is correlated with factors such as age, marital status, pregnancy and the use of hormone treatments.

It also explains, he says, why fewer people get it in later life.

However, says Zenian, in recent years there has been an increase in wrist problems in older people - and he puts this down to the increased availability of Viagra.
